911 Is for Emergency Use Only

The Tenafly Police Department provides the following advice to residents concerning the proper use of the 911 emergency system. 911 should only be used for true emergencies. Some examples of calls that meet the criteria for using 911 include the following:

  • When life is in danger
  • When you see a fire
  • When a crime is being committed
  • When Police, Fire, or an Ambulance is needed immediately

When calling 911, please:

  • Remain calm.
  • Give the location of the emergency.
  • Explain the type of emergency.
  • Stay on the line until the dispatcher tells you to hang up. Even when the dispatcher is asking for additional information, police are responding to your location. Hanging up will not expedite our response, it only gives us less information to work with.

Guidelines

These guidelines for the use of 911 are important. The Police, Fire, and Ambulance are there to ensure your safety and prevent disasters. Following these simple guidelines will help us serve the community better during emergencies.

Burglar, Fire & Medical Alarm Registration

Borough regulations require that the occupant of any business or resident in the Borough must register any burglar or fire alarm for the premise. Last year, the Tenafly Police and Fire responded to over 2,400 false alarms and the regulations require the alarm to be registered to reduce the number of such false alarms. This is done, in part, by better control over faulty or inferior alarm equipment. Please contact Police Headquarters to obtain an alarm registration form. These forms will be available online in the near future.
