New Tenafly Police Headquarters

Eleven (11) bids were received April 15, 2008 for the construction of a new 15,000 s.f. police headquarters to be constructed next to the existing Municipal Center across the driveway from Tenafly Ambulance headquarters.  The bids are being reviewed by our architect and must be awarded or rejected within 60 days.      Funding for the $5.5 million project was authorized in a capital bond ordinance adopted by the Mayor and Council after a public hearing in October 2007. Final funding was secured in December 2007 through a successful Bond Sale after the Borough obtained authorization from the Local Finance Board of the New Jersey Division of Local Government Services of its debt service schedule for the capital financing of the project.

In 2003, the Borough retained the firm of Arcari & Iovino Architects to conduct a space study and prepare design options to expand the existing police headquarters. After reviewing 5 design options, and two proposed locations, and cost estimates to expand the current facility built in 1963, the Mayor and Council opted to construct a new facility rather than try to add-on to the current 7,200 s.f. headquarters. In September 2007, the governing body approved the preliminary design for the new building and floor plans prepared by the architect, and the architect was authorized to proceed with the final design.

The new police headquarters will include secure space, such as a more secure cellblock and prisoner sally port entry that are separated from public areas, secure and separate processing areas, state-mandated separate juvenile interview room, as well as locker room and shower facilities for female employees, which do not exist in the current building. Additionally, space will be allocated in the new building for activities and functions that did not exist at the time of the construction of the present headquarters, such as a secure climate-controlled room for computer servers, secure storage of equipment, an armory with electronic weapons cleaning system, training and conference rooms.

In 1963, there were 28 full-time employees working in police headquarters. Today, there are 43 full-time and 2 part-time employees, including 4 female employees, and 6 civilian dispatchers.
