Tenafly Public Library

The Tenafly Public Library is a community center for learning, culture and entertainment.  Within its four walls and reaching beyond with public Internet access, the Tenafly Public Library offers a  growing and evolving world of resources and services.

The Tenafly Public Library card presents on-site access to over eighty-thousand books, compact discs, DVDs, videos, books on tape,  and magazines for adults, young adults, and children.  Through its membership in the Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS), Tenafly cardholders may also borrow, via the Web or in-person, materials from the collections of seventy-three member public libraries.  Items selected can then be sent to the Tenafly Public Library for convenient pickup.

There is always something going on at the Library, be it a lecture, slideshow, book discussion group, art exhibit, historical display or Friends of the Library concert on our Steinway piano.

Always consult the Tenafly Borough Newsletter or our seasonal brochures for current activity listings.  You may also check the local papers.

The Library also offers a continuing roster of childrens programs that include storytimes, often with crafts, Summer Reading Programs and special Friends programs with music, marionettes, magicians, storytellers and more.  All of these programs are tied to reading and the love of books.

The Library offers indispensable professional reference and information assistance in both the Adult Reference and Childrens rooms.  Extensive collections of encyclopedias, dictionaries, directories and handbooks in many subject areas are kept up to date. Online reference resources are also extensive and available on-site and from home via the Web.

It takes only a few minutes to register for a free library card.

REFERENCE

The Library is now making available to the public substantial holdings of the Tenafly Record, The Bergen Record and The Northern Valley Tribune from the late 19th century into the early years of the 20th century.  These resources are available on the public computer in the Reference Room as well as on microfilm.
Of the three newspapers, the holdings of the Tenafly Record (although not complete) offer the earliest detailed glimpse into the life of the community.

These historical newspapers will be of great interest to local historians, students for their projects, government officials, interested residents and others.  Before his death, longtime Tenafly resident Albert Stone donated the newspapers in their original paper format.

GRANT

The Library has received a 2005 NJ Department of Community Affairs Livable Communities Grant to purchase materials including books, DVDs and CDs on the cultures of countries of the Middle East, Central Asia and Southeast Asia.Titles address a broad range of cultural subjects including folklore, crafts, literature, travel and etiquette, cooking and food, history, business, current events and more. All materials for both adults and children may be borrowed. Items acquired through the Grant are identified by bright yellow “Lamp of Learning” spine labels and may be located on the new book shelves. For further information, please ask the Reference Librarian.

YOUNG ADULT FICTION – SPRING For A New Author

Students will enjoy browsing the young adult fiction shelves for the latest titles by popular young adult authors. The collection, located in the Friends of the Library Room, grows each year through the very generous bequest of Helen Miller Gould Mitchell who taught in the Tenafly School District and died in 1983.
