THE BUREAU

The Fire Prevention Bureau has the responsibility and authority to enter, investigate and perform routine fire inspections of all buildings, structures and properties in the Borough of Tenafly with the exception owner-occupied detached one and two-family dwellings used exclusively for dwelling purposes as required by the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code.

It is our responsibility to enforce the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code and other local fire safety regulations. This includes the inspection of all Life Hazard Use Properties as defined by Uniform Fire Code (ie: gas stations, schools, nursing homes, daycare facilities, auto repair/auto body shops, places of assembly and large retail operations, etc.) and the inspection of all Non-Life Hazard businesses, offices and multi-family residences and other structures in the Borough of Tenafly.

Additional duties of the Bureau of Fire Prevention include the certification of smoke detectors/carbon monoxide alarms for the resale of private homes, investigating complaints, fire investigations, issuance of fire safety permits, issuance of violation notices and penalty notices for failure to comply with the law and Fire Prevention Week activities.

The Bureau derives its primary funding from Life Hazard and Non Life Hazard Use registration fees. All moneys collected are solely used in the enforcement of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code, in public education programs and for materials and expenses related to fire inspections, investigations and prevention programs.

 

SMOKE & CARBON INSPECTIONS

Before any one or two family dwelling is sold, leased, or there is a change of occupancy, the owner shall obtain a Certificate of Smoke Detector & Carbon Monoxide Alarm Compliance showing compliance with the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code from the Tenafly Fire Prevention Bureau.

FEES & PAYMENT:
The fee for the inspection is calculated from the date of when the Fire Prevention office receives the application to the closing or move in date. 

Once the application is received via email the fee will be calculated:

More than 10 business days            $45.00
Between 4-10 business days           $90.00
Less than 4 business days               $161.00
For 2+ family homes, the fee would be multiplied per unit**

Payment for the paperwork would need to be paid via check made out to the Borough of Tenafly.  This can be placed in the drop box located at the front door of Borough Hall or in the regular mail.  Please make sure to write Amanda Booth/Fire Department on the envelope.

Upon receipt of your payment Fire Prevention will either call/email the contact person to schedule the the inspection. 

Please note we normally complete these inspections on Monday’s and some Thursdays between 10am-12pm until the Borough fully reopens.

Due to COVID-19 the owner can fill out the Affidavit In Lieu of Inspection, please ask more about this affidavit after you submit the Smoke & Carbon Application:

TYPE 1 PERMIT & TENT REQUIREMENTS

Any tent over 900 sq feet would require Fire Prevention to inspect the tent once it is installed.  

Please submit your Type 1 Permit application, flame certificates and information sheet to abooth@tenafly.net

The fee for this permit is $54.00 and would need to be paid via check made out to the Borough of Tenafly.

REGISTRATION & INSPECTIONS

The Tenafly Bureau of Fire Prevention is always striving to provide optimal services to the business community and to promote a fire safe community. It is the intent of the Bureau of Fire Prevention to promote a fire safe community through annual cyclical inspections of all premises and structures within the jurisdiction of the Borough with the exception of owner-occupied detached one and two-family dwellings used exclusively for dwelling purposes as required by the State of New Jersey Uniform Fire Code.
To that end, the Borough of Tenafly adopted Ordinance No. 11-13, on October 25, 2011 to update the ordinance establishing the Tenafly Fire Prevention Bureau and providing for the annual registration of all non-life hazard uses in the Borough of Tenafly, the collection of fees for those uses, and for the inspection thereof.

NON-LIFE HAZARD USE REGISTRATION FEES SCHEDULE

In addition to the inspection and permit fees established by the New Jersey Uniform Fire Safety Act and pursuant to the regulations of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety, the following additional annual Local Registration Fees for non-life hazard use groups shall be collected for each individual use and occupancy as described below in the Fee Schedule at the following link:
