The Bureau

The Fire Prevention Bureau has the responsibility and authority to enter, investigate and perform routine fire inspections of all buildings, structures, and properties in the Borough of Tenafly with the exception owner-occupied detached one and two-family dwellings used exclusively for dwelling purposes as required by the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code.

Responsibilities

It is our responsibility to enforce the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code and other local fire safety regulations. This includes the inspection of all Life Hazard Use Properties as defined by Uniform Fire Code such as:

  • Auto Repair/Auto Body Shops
  • Daycare Facilities
  • Gas Stations
  • Large Retail Operations
  • Nursing Homes
  • Places of Assembly
  • Schools, etc.

This includes the inspection of all Non-Life Hazard businesses, offices, and multi-family residences and other structures in the Borough of Tenafly.

Additional Duties

Additional duties of the Bureau of Fire Prevention include:

  • The certification of smoke detectors/carbon monoxide alarms for the resale of private homes
  • Fire investigations
  • Investigating complaints
  • Issuance of fire safety permits
  • Issuance of violation notices and penalty notices for failure to comply with the law and Fire Prevention Week activities

Life Hazard & Non-Life Hazard Use Registration Fees

The Bureau derives its primary funding from Life Hazard and Non-Life Hazard Use registration fees. All money collected is solely used in the enforcement of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code, in public education programs and for materials and expenses related to fire inspections, investigations, and prevention programs.

Non-Life Hazard Use Registration & Inspections

The Tenafly Bureau of Fire Prevention is always striving to provide optimal services to the business community and to promote a fire-safe community. It is the intent of the Bureau of Fire Prevention to promote a fire safe community through annual cyclical inspections of all premises and structures within the jurisdiction of the Borough with the exception of owner-occupied detached one and two-family dwellings used exclusively for dwelling purposes as required by the State of New Jersey Uniform Fire Code.

To that end, the Borough of Tenafly adopted Ordinance Number 11-13, on October 25, 2011, to update the ordinance establishing the Tenafly Fire Prevention Bureau and providing for the annual registration of all non-life hazard uses in the Borough of Tenafly, the collection of fees for those uses, and for the inspection thereof.

Non-Life Hazard Use Registration Fees Schedule

In addition to the inspection and permit fees established by the New Jersey Uniform Fire Safety Act and pursuant to the regulations of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety, the following additional annual Local Registration Fees for non-life hazard use groups shall be collected for each individual use and occupancy as described in the listing of Non-Life Hazard Fees (PDF).
